Sébastien Olivier Buemi, born 31 October 1988, is a Swiss racing driver and the second FIA Formula E Championship Champion, having won the 2015/16 title at the 2016 London ePrix II.[1] Buemi earned his maiden FE crown by setting the fastest lap at the season ending race, having duelled throughout the season with Lucas di Grassi for the honours.[2]

Buemi is set to take part in the 2019/20 edition of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, having been signed up to the Nissan e.Dams squad as their lead driver.[3] It would be Buemi's second season with the Nissan e.Dams alliance, having finished as runner-up in the 2018/19 Championship with them, being beaten on the final day by Jean-Éric Vergne.[4]

Previously, Buemi had finished as runner up in the Championship during the 2014/15 season, missing out by just a single point at the 2015 London ePrix II.[5] The Swiss racer would also challenge for the 2016/17 title, dominating the first half of the season, only to fail to record any points in the final four rounds and concede his crown to di Grassi.[6] His fourth FE campaign would be somewhat less successful, with Buemi failing to win at all in 2017/18, although he would finish fourth in the Championship.[7]

Outside of Formula E, Buemi has had experience of both Formula One and the World Endurance Championship, and is considered to be among the best drivers in the FE field.

Background[]

Buemi is best known for his Formula One exploits, having been one of the youngest drivers to start in the championship in 2009.[1] It was in his karting days, however, that Buemi would get his first experience of Formula One at the age of 15, driving an Arrows F1 car.[1] Buemi was spotted by Toro Rosso in 2009, having competed in Formula Three and GP2 since 2006.[1] Currently a test driver for Red Bull Racing, Buemi has tasted victory in the World Endurance Championship driving for Toyota.[1]

Formula E History[]

Buemi was named as a driver for e.dams-Renault for the inaugural 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship, partnering Nicolas Prost.[1] After retiring on his debut at the 2014 Beijing ePrix, Buemi recovered to take third in Putrajaya before claiming the honours in the 2014 Punta del Este ePrix.[8][9] He was leading team mate Nicolas Prost in the championship until the 2015 Miami ePrix, where Prost claimed his first ePrix victory. He then made Formula E history by taking victory for a second time, leading from pole position at the 2015 Monaco ePrix and taking 28 out of a possible 30 points from the weekend, overtaking Prost in the championship.[10]

A second place in Berlin followed, as Buemi became a serious title challenger, before e.dams cost him valuable points in 2015 Moscow ePrix.[11] His team misread the teams' information before the race, believing there to be a 68 second minimum pitstop time, not the 58 that had been agreed.[11] Although Buemi did his best to recover his former position, he ultimately finished in ninth, having been fifth before the error.[11]

Heading into London for the season finale, Buemi was one of three drivers with a serious chance of taking the title, with Nelson Piquet Jr. and Lucas di Grassi his rivals. His weekend started perfectly, as he took the First Visa London ePrix with relative ease from pole, cutting the gap to Piquet to just three points.[12] Sunday appeared to be even more in his favour, as he was the only one of the title contenders to qualify in the top ten after a rain hit session.[5] But, it was not to be, as Buemi spun during the race, and was then left frustrated in his attempts to get past Bruno Senna for fourth, a position which would have won him the title.[5]

Renaults and Revenge[]

Retained alongside Prost for the newly renamed Renault e.Dams effort, Buemi immediately proved to be the class of the field at the 2015 Donington Test, completing an immense number of laps.[13] Their impressive display was immediately reflected at the 2015/16 season opener in Beijing, where Buemi became the first man to take pole, fastest lap and victory in the same race.[14] He looked set to repeat the feat at the 2015 Putrajaya ePrix a few weeks later, but the Swiss' race would be ruined when his Renault Z.E. 15 began to overheat at the end of his first stint.[15]

Despite that first set-back, Buemi reinforced his tag as favourite by winning the 2015 Punta del Este ePrix, before claiming second at the following two rounds.[16] Long Beach saw Buemi hit problems once again, the result of a sudden loss of ability to get into the Super Pole session at the end of qualifying, with the Swiss driver having to battle from the back.[17] Buemi still scored the fastest lap, however, and after grabbing a podium at the 2016 Paris ePrix, Buemi stole the win in Berlin to close the gap back to Championship leader di Grassi to just a single point as the Championship headed to London for the season finale.[18]

During the penultimate qualifying session of the season it seemed as if the world was conspiring against the title pretenders, as both got caught out by rain on their laps.[19] His title rival di Grassi qualified just ahead, and both would battle up the order through the race, the Brazilian claiming fourth ahead of Buemi to hold a three point advantage into the final round.[20] Into the final qualifying session of the season and Buemi finally rediscovered his one-lap pace, setting a time good enough for pole during the Super Pole shootout to leave himself level on points with di Grassi at the start of the final race, the 2016 London ePrix II.[21]

Buemi would have the added bonus of having teammate Prost sharing the front row, and the two Renaults conspired to block di Grassi into turn three to get more cars in between the two title pretenders.[2] Unfortunately, di Grassi misjudged the closing speeds and slammed into the back of Buemi, causing race ending damage to both of their first cars, leaving di Grassi as Champion.[2] That was, until Buemi stopped for his second car and tried to set fastest lap, with di Grassi also heading out to try and deny the Swiss racer the title.[2] Ultimately, Buemi managed to find a gap behind race leader Prost and set a stunning lap to take the title through fastest lap points, with di Grassi later getting penalised for causing the first lap accident.[2]

Raising the Ramparts[]

Seeing no reason to change their line-up, Renault e.Dams signed Buemi and Prost up for a third successive season, as Buemi and Renault set about defending their titles.[22] At the 2016 Donington Test Buemi established himself as title favourite once again, completing a lot of mileage and smashing the circuit record on the final day.

His strong start to testing would follow into the start of the season, with Buemi claiming three straight wins in Hong Kong, Marrakech and Buenos Aires.[23] Buemi's luck seemed to have turned in Mexico City, with a spin late on dumped him down to thirteenth place, although the Swiss racer did go on to claim fastest lap.[24] However, any hopes of a mid-season slump by the Swiss racer evaporated in the following rounds, as Buemi scored two further wins in Monte Carlo and Paris.[25]

Buemi's campaign would, however, begin to unravel in Berlin, with the Swiss racer making a mistake in qualifying for the first race.[26] He battle back to fifth on the road during the race, although post-race scrutineering revealed that his cars had used illegal tyre pressures, meaning he was disqualified from the result.[26] He responded brilliantly the following day, claiming his sixth victory of the season in the second of the weekend's races, although this was in the knowledge that he would miss the double header in New York the following month.[27]

Buemi would see his Championship lead cut to ten points in New York, with long standing rival di Grassi the man to make a late title challenge. However, Buemi would head into the first Montreal ePrix as favourite, although was a furious fourth after a race full of contact with other drivers.[28] However, Buemi's day would get even worse, for he was subsequently disqualified from the result when the first of his cars, which had suffered a heavy crash in practice, was found to be underweight.[28]

That disqualification meant Buemi entered the season ending race in Montreal with an eighteen point deficit.[29] Ultimately, the final race of the season would not go in Buemi's favour, as his outburst the previous evening, combined with a poor qualifying result, left him outside of the points.[29] Arch-rival di Grassi duly swept to a maiden title at Buemi's expense, although both vowed to battle again in 2017/18.

The Swiss Star[]

Buemi and Prost were once again signed up by Renault e.Dams for the 2017/18 season, both announced before the end of the 2016/17 season.[30] However, while the new Renault e.Dams creation looked competitive in the 2017 Valencia Test, the French manufacturer announced that they would be withdrawing from the series, to be replaced by alliance partner Nissan for 2018/19.[31] That news rather undercut the Swiss racer's start to the season, with mistakes in both races in Hong Kong to leave the Chinese backed state with just a single point.[32]

Buemi did, however, bounce back with pole position in Marrakech, and would only be denied victory in the closing stages by a late lunge from Felix Rosenqvist.[33] The following round in Santiago saw Buemi finish third, having been outpaced throughout by the sister cars of Jean-Éric Vergne and André Lotterer run by Techeetah, with another third place coming in Mexico City.[34] Indeed, Buemi had been on for second in the Mexican capital, but was denied the second step on the podium after a ferocious defence from Oliver Turvey on the final lap.[35]

A dismal race in Punta del Este followed for Buemi, for the Swiss racer retired from the race early on having already crashed in qualifying.[36] The Swiss racer then recorded a run of four points finishes during the European stage of the season, but missed out on taking a podium finish at his home race in Zürich.[37] That run put Buemi into the top four in the Championship, but the Swiss racer was out of the title fight heading into the season finale.[37]

Regardless, the season ending races in New York City would see Buemi return to his historic form, with the Swiss racer claiming pole for both races.[38] Yet, the Swiss racer's Renault was powerless to prevent an Audi one-two in the first race, before Vergne bruised past Buemi at the start of the second race.[38] The Swiss racer would then get outdone by the two Audis later in the race, ending the season in fourth in the Championship with 125 points.[7]

Nissan Needs[]

Buemi would be retained for the 2018/19 season as Nissan replaced Renault, despite the Swiss racer's continued association with the Toyota WEC programme.[39] He would initially be paired with Alexander Albon, although the Anglo-Thai racer's sudden negotiations with Toro Rosso during the 2018 Valencia Test left Buemi to test the new IM01 all alone for the first two days of running.[40] He would, however, be joined on the final test day by former FE racer Oliver Rowland, who was subsequently signed as Buemi's teammate for the full 2018/19 campaign.[41]

Buemi's season began in quiet fashion, the Swiss ace driving to sixth in the season opening Ad Diriyah E-Prix.[42] An even quieter afternoon followed in Marrakech, before Buemi swept to pole position in Santiago, only to crash out of the race in the closing stages after a race long battle with Sam Bird and Pascal Wehrlein.[43] Two non-scores followed at the following two rounds, before Buemi scored eighth place in the 2019 Sanya E-Prix.[44]

A battling performance in Rome followed, Buemi sweeping to fifth with fastest lap, before a disappointing afternoon in Paris once again saw Buemi fail to score, this time due to a puncture while holding second.[45] The Swiss ace would subsequently battle to fifth in Monte Carlo, before kick-starting his title challenge at the 2019 Berlin E-Prix, claiming his first podium of the season from pole.[46] Third place at his home race in Bern, Switzerland, followed, with Buemi having to once again defend his position rather than go on the attack.[47]

Heading into the penultimate race of the season Buemi sat 54 points off the lead in seventh, although with 58 still to fight for the Swiss ace remained mathematically in the title hunt.[48] Only a perfect weekend would hence give the Swiss ace the crown, and he duly started the double-header in perfect style, claiming an impressive victory in the First Race from pole, while Championship leader Jean-Éric Vergne crashed out.[48] The Swiss ace hence entered the Season Finale 26 points off the lead in fourth place, one of three drivers still in contention for the crown.[4]

Unfortunately for Buemi his hopes of the crown were ended during qualifying, for the Swiss ace failed to secure pole position, and hence missed out on three necessary points.[4] Yet, Buemi would enjoy a strong race at the head of the field to finish the season with a third place finish, and hence move into second on the final day on 119 points, seventeen down on Vergne.[4]

The Sixth Sense[]

Buemi, as well as teammate Rowland, were re-signed by Nissan e.Dams for the 2019/20 season, marking Buemi's sixth FE campaign.[3]
