Juan Manuel López is an Argentinian racing driver, who took part in the 2014 Donington Test before the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship season started in Beijing.[1]
Background
López began his racing career in Argentina, taking part in the Formula Renault Championship in Argentina in 1995.[2] After two full seasons, López moved up to the South American Formula 3 Championship, taking sixteenth in the final standings, while also competing in numerous other championships, including the South American Super Touring Car Championship.[2]
Europe vs Home
A move to Europe followed in 1999, with López taking part in the 1999 Italian Formula Three Championship, completing the year with a single win to his name.[2] After being entered in numerous one-off events by his team throughout the year, López progressed to the British Formula Three championship in 2000.[2] Lopez would only attend six races, however, and opted for a return to Argentina at the end of the season.[2]
López returned to compete in the TC 2000 Championship in Argentina for the 2001 season, while also entering several races in the SASTCC.[2] After only scoring four points in his TC 2000 debut season, López tried to improve his record in 2002, staying with his father's team CL Racing.[2] A better season saw him score thirteen points, with a third season in TC 2000 following in 2003.[2] It was unsuccessful, however, as he scored just two points all season.
GT: Spain
After a single season in Turismo Nacional Argentina (2004), and two full campaigns in the Top Race V6 Series (2005-6), López moved (once again) to Europe, taking part in the Spanish GT Championship in 2007.[2] Although he shared his duties with his TR V6 campaign, López managed to win his class outright, although he returned to Argentina the following year.[2] After a quiet 2008 season, however, López chose to head to Spain once again.[2]
Two seasons in 2009 and 2010 gave Lopez valuable experience and opportunity, with López coming third in 2009, and runner-up (overall) in 2010, prompting him to move into the International GT Open Championship.[2] His 2011 campaign saw him take fifth in his debut season, having won four races outright, a feat he repeated in 2012.[2] 2012 also saw López finish the season in fifth overall.[2]
Formula E History
López was given the chance to drive the 'Development' Spark-Renault SRT_01E on the third day of the 2014 Donington Test, completing fifteen laps in the afternoon session.[1] China Racing then approached the FIA about using López in their second pair of cars, which had not run in the test until that point.[3] The FIA accepted and López completed 46 laps for China Racing on the fourth day, setting a best time of 1:33.425.[3] Lopez was not, however, called upon when the season started at the 2014 Beijing ePrix.
