de Ferran made his name in the Brazilian Karting scene, hoping to follow in the footsteps of childhood hero Emerson Fittipaldi. Given an opportunity to drive in Formula Ford in 1987, de Ferran's career began to take off, taking part in Formula Three level races in 1991. 1991 saw de Ferran compete in Europe for the first time, taking part in the British Formula Three Championship, moving up to International Formula 3000 in 1993.
CART to IndianapolisEdit
Offered a test late in 1994, de Ferran signed for VDS Racing in the 1995 CART Championship in the United States, claiming his first victory at the season ending race at Leguna Seca. 1996 and 1997 saw de Ferran emerge as a title contender, missing out on the latter title after failing to win a race (despite coming close twice). 1998 and 1999 were quiet years for the Brazilian race, although he did take his first win since 1996 in the CART Championship.
It was in 2000, with new team Penske, that de Ferran proved his potential, setting records and title challenges that none could surpass. Two wins in 2000 were enough for de Ferran to seal his first ever championship win, with de Ferran heading into the 2001 season as favourite once again. Another successful season saw him walk away with the title, scoring 31 more points than the season before.
de Ferran moved, full time, into the Indy Racing League in 2002, aiming to take victory at the Indianopolis 500. Achieving his goal in 2003, de Ferran left Penske at the end of the season, entering retirement as a racing driver.
Direct and CreateEdit
De Ferran returned to racing in 2005, joining BAR Honda in Formula One as a Sporting Director. He remained with the team until mid-2007, ultimately leaving to form a new team, de Ferran Motorsports, which would compete in the America Le Mans Series from 2008. De Ferran also employed himself as a driver for the team, culminating in a runner-up spot in the 2009 ALMS Championship in the LMP1 class.
After retiring once again from racing at the end of 2009, de Ferran moved his team into the IZOD IndyCar Championship in 2010, merging de Ferran Motorsport with Jay Penske's Dragon Racing team. After taking four top ten finishes in 2010, de Ferran Dragon Racing were forced to close their doors in early 2011, a lack of funding the ultimate cause. From this, de Ferran moved into the promotional side of motorsport, while also joining the ICONIC Committee to develop the future of the IndyCar Championship.
Formula E HistoryEdit
De Ferran was announced as a test driver for Andretti Autosport on the 2nd of July 2014, alongside Scott Speed. After completing the first day of the 2014 Donington Test, de Ferran stepped down from his drive (which was thought to be a one-off drive in any case), focusing on the Ambassadorial role he was given by the FIA in August 2013.
