The 2019 New York City eTrophy Race 2, otherwise known as the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy New York City Race, was the tenth and final round of the 2018/19 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, staged at the Brooklyn Street Circuit in New York City, USA, on the 14 July 2019. The race, which was staged in support of the season ending 2019 New York City E-Prix II, would see Sérgio Jimenez register a dominant victory, having secured the inaugural eTrophy Championship on Saturday.

Indeed, Jimenez would start the day in fine form, sweeping to pole position ahead of teammate Cacá Bueno in a private duel to head the field. Their closest challenger proved to be Simon Evans, while Ahmed Bin Khanen claimed pole in the Pro-Am class, starting fifth overall ahead of Yaqi Zhang.

The start of the race would also prove to be a Jimenez benefit, with the Brazilian racer streaking clear of the grid to claim an early lead. Bueno duly gave chase, although he would have to defend heavily from Evans into the first corner in order to hold onto second place.

Behind, Bryan Sellers had to battle his way through the Pro-Am runners, with an excellent dive past Pro-Am Champion Bandar Alesayi his standout move. He duly cleared the lower class runners within the opening ten minutes, although a particularly stubborn defence from Bin Khanen ensured that Sellers was well off the back of the Pro field when he did eventually get clear.

Out front, meanwhile, Jimenez was able to eek out his advantage at the head of the field, leaving teammate Bueno in a dogfight with Katherine Legge. Indeed, the British racer had managed to sweep past Evans on the opening lap as a result of Bueno's defensive dive at the first corner, but would also find the #0 Jaguar a particularly difficult proposition to pass.

The eTrophy's other female racer was also in an intense fight during the middle part of the race, with Célia Martin defending heavily from Pro-Am Champion Alesayi. Unfortunately for Martin, however, all of her hard work would be undone by a mistake into turn six, with the Frenchman locking up and sliding down the escape road, before retiring late on with an electrical failure.

With that the race was run, with Jimenez cruising home almost five seconds clear of the rest of the Pro class to claim his third win of the season, and with fastest lap. Bueno, meanwhile, would just keep Legge at bay for second, while Evans and Sellers rounded out the Pro contingent.

The honours in Pro-Am would go to Bin Khanen after a late defensive drive to keep Yaqi Zhang at bay, while Pro-Am Champion Alesayi completed the podium, having had a lonely race once Martin removed herself from contention.

Background

There were no changes made to the Brooklyn Street Circuit ahead of the 2018/19 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy season finale, with no revisions to the entry list either. That was, until Mark Hacking announced his withdrawal from the meeting, the Canadian's guest car simply unable to be repaired in time for the race. There was also more bad news for Bryan Sellers, who had a major motor leak on his car meaning he would miss qualifying.

A Relaxed Race

Victory, combined with Sellers failing to race, let alone score, in the 2019 New York City eTrophy Race 1 had ensured that Sérgio Jimenez was declared the Pro Champion with a race to spare, heading into the finale 22 points clear with just 21 left to fight for. Sellers would therefore be fighting to finish as runner-up in the finale, having also slipped behind Jimenez's teammate Cacá Bueno in the opening race in NYC. Simon Evans was also in the hunt for second, having ended Saturday afternoon on 98 points, while Katherine Legge was set to finish the campaign in fifth.

Likewise, the Pro-Am Championship had been settled with a race to spare, with Bandar Alesayi officially declared as the Champion with a 23 point advantage heading into the finale. Yaqi Zhang would therefore finish the inaugural Pro-Am Championship in second, with Ahmed Bin Khanen heading into the finale too far back to challenge the Chinese racer. Célia Martin, meanwhile, was set to finish fourth, with Ziyi Z Zhang rounding out the top five.

Milestones

Standings

There were no changes to the order of the Pro Championship as a result of the season finale, with Sérgio Jimenez officially ending the season with 155 points. That left him 28 clear of teammate and runner-up Cacá Bueno in the final standings, while Bryan Sellers just hung on to third, ending the season on 107. Indeed, the American racer was just a point ahead of Simon Evans in fourth after the finale, while Katherine Legge ended a promising season in a distant fifth.

The season finale had little impact on the complexion of the Pro-Am Championship, with only the final point tallies of four drivers changing as a result of the final battle. Bandar Alesayi was hence declared as Champion with 155, leaving him nineteen clear of second placed Yaqi Zhang. Third place would go to Ahmed Bin Khanen on 117, while Célia Martin and Ziyi Z Zhang rounded out the final top five on 77 and 36 points respectively.
